This piece is really a little ode to the bees.


In support of their prescious existance, and in gratitude to the gifts they give to all of us.

These tiny, devoted beings gift us so much. The golden beeswax that becomes our candles, the rich, delicious honey which nourishes so many, and the quiet, essential work of pollinating the flowers, trees, and crops that keep our ecosystems, and our bodies, alive.

Their soft, steady humming feels like its own kind of sound medicine. If you’ve ever stood near a hive or a blossoming tree covered in bees, you might have felt it. Their soothing vibration that seems to settle the nervous system and remind you that life is busy, alive, and deeply interconnected.


Beeswax carries the imprint of this living world. The flowers the bees visited, the nectar they gathered, the pollen they carried from one blossom to another. For me, using beeswax feels like such a privelige and a blessing, with their soft beautiful golden honey glow, the honey sweet scent and gives me a moment to honour their tireless devotion to the web of life we depend on.


Creating a Somatic Sanctuary with Beeswax Candles


One of my favourite parts of somatic practice is the simple ritual of preparing the space.

Slowing down… choosing a corner of the room… dimming the lights… lighting a candle.

That small act of striking a match and watching the flame come alive can be a cue for your whole system to exhale.

Candles speak to our senses in such a gentle way. The soft glow, the subtle scent, the way the nervous system naturally exhales as the room gets a little warmer, and softer. When I’m setting up a space for practice, I’m not just thinking about how it looks, but how it will feel in my body and in my breath.

This is why I choose beeswax candles.

They’re as close to “earth-made” as a candle can be: just beeswax and a natural wick. No synthetic fragrances, no hidden additives, no chemical overload for a nervous system that’s already trying to find its way back to regulation.

Below are 10 reasons I love beeswax candles for somatic practice and for everyday life at home.


Non-toxic and simple

Pure beeswax candles are just that: beeswax and a cotton (or other natural) wick. Nothing added.When you start mixing in hardeners, synthetic fragrances, or other waxes, you can also be adding toxic fumes into the air when the candle burns. Beeswax, in its natural state, simply doesn’t need any of that.


A gentle, natural aroma

Beeswax has its own subtle sweet scent, sometimes slightly floral. The aroma comes from what bees bring into the hive: nectar, pollen, and plant resins. It’s the aroma of honey.


Longest burn time

Beeswax is known for burning longer than most other candle waxes. Even a small tealight can burn for hours, and a larger pillar, if well-made, can give you a beautiful, steady light for a very long time. When compared with similar-sized soy or paraffin candles, beeswax generally lasts significantly longer, often around 50–60% more burn time — which makes it a more sustainable choice over the long term.


Ideal for hot climates

Beeswax is a harder wax with a higher melting point than soy or paraffin.If you’ve ever watched a paraffin candle droop and warp on a hot day, you’ll know what I mean. Beeswax doesn’t start to melt until around 65°C, so it holds its shape much better in warm or tropical climates. Perfect for our Australian summers.


Soft, calming light for your nervous system

The light from a beeswax candle is warm, golden, and soothing. Some people liken it to natural sunlight. For somatic practice, this matters. The gentle tone is easier on the eyes, calming for the mind, and can support the body to shift out of “doing mode” and into rest, reflection, and deeper presence. It’s beautiful for evening wind-down, bedtime rituals, and slow, quiet moments of self-connection.


Less chemical load for your body and home

Many conventional candles (especially those made from paraffin, soy, or palm wax) are chemically processed and often combined with synthetic fragrances and stabilisers. When burned, they can release substances such as formaldehyde, toluene, benzene and other compounds that are not ideal for our bodies or our indoor air.

By choosing pure beeswax, you’re choosing a candle that:

  • Doesn’t rely on petroleum byproducts (like paraffin).

  • Doesn’t depend on heavily processed hydrogenated oils and GMO crops (like most soy).

  • Doesn’t contribute to the large-scale deforestation issues linked with palm oil.

In short: it’s a kinder option for your lungs, your nervous system, and the planet.

Beeswax candles are said to act as natural ionisers, releasing negative ions when they burn.These negative ions can bind to positively charged particles like dust, pollen, and dander, helping them fall out of the air more quickly and potentially improving indoor air quality. Sometimes it’s these small, sensory rituals that help us come home to ourselves, one breath and one moment at a time. They compound, they support our nervous system regulation and they resource us, which builds our capacity and ability to be present.
